Inspirational Speaker – Janet Horton

Janet Yarlott Horton, Chaplain (Colonel) Retired, U.S. Army
Christian Science Endorser and Author

Janet Yarlott Horton, a native of Crystal, Michigan, and a longtime advocate for Christian Science, served in the U.S. Army for over 30 years, retiring as a Chaplain Colonel in 2004. She was a trailblazer, becoming the first woman to serve as a Division or Corps Chaplain and the first woman promoted to Colonel in the Army Chaplain Corps. Her service included overseeing religious support for Joint Task Forces in Albania, Macedonia, and Kosovo.

Janet has dedicated her life to serving others—especially through the lens of spiritual support and Christian Science teachings. She holds a Master of Divinity from Boston University School of Theology, where she was honored as a distinguished alumna in 2011, and an MA in Religious Studies from Stanford University. Janet was the Christian Science Endorser and Trainer for military chaplains at Boston University from 2006-2018.

In her military career, she held various leadership positions, including the first woman Major Command Chaplain, Executive Director for the Armed Forces Chaplains Board at the Department of Defense, and Division Chaplain for the First Armored Division. She also contributed significantly to military training and authored important safety lesson plans.

Janet was present at the Pentagon on 9/11 and played a vital role in advising the Department of Defense on issues related to terrorism and national security. She was instrumental in educating military personnel on religious matters, including the mindset of terrorists and Muslim issues.

Her book, Cracking the Camouflage Ceiling, shares her journey as one of the first female Army Chaplains, and in 2019, she was inducted into the Army Women’s History Foundation Hall of Fame.

Her deep commitment to service and Christian Science principles continues to inspire, and her story demonstrates the power of faith, dedication, and resilience in challenging environments.
